Joyce de Ruiter
The documentary Silence in the Night tells the story of 36-year-old Joyce. At the age of sixteen, just like her brother, she was diagnosed with Usher syndrome. The fact that she was already hearing impaired as a baby and her vision deteriorated more and more fell into place.
Although doctors could not give any hope of treatment in the future and even a doctor told her that she would not be of value in society, Joyce decided not to sit still and wait for the light to really go out. After finishing high school, she started the HBO Visual Marketing course. She made the most of life, found the love of her life and started a family with him. Her greatest goal in life is to be of value to others and a treatment for all people with Usher syndrome.
Nikki de Punder
Nikki is 15 years old and has known since she was a toddler that she has Usher syndrome. Recently she told her friends about it for the first time. Her greatest passion is horseback riding and her dream is that she will later be able to participate in the Olympic or Paralympic Games. In the documentary she meets Joyce. For the first time she meets someone who has been diagnosed with the same diagnosis as herself.
