Insecure Marie (10) has Down Syndrome and likes to pretend she is a knight with her dog Daisy. Marie wants to be friends with Jesse (12), the tough kid from next door. When Marie finally plucks up the courage to go talk to him and accidentally knocks his new phone out of his hand, and the phone breaks, he gets mad at her. Jesse takes Daisy from Marie and he won’t give back Daisy unless Marie figures out a way to fix his phone. But with even her mother is too busy to help her, Marie has no one to fall back on but herself. Luckily, she finds an unexpected ally.
Standing up for yourself is the central theme of Knight Marie. This film is about being resilient, about facing your fears instead of hiding from them. Knight Marie will show elements of friendship, looking closely to your loved ones and being open to special encounters.
Director Minka: “When I was in primary school there were no lessons in becoming resilient. I think it is important to let children know that nobody deserves to be bullied and that you can learn to stand up for yourself. I chose to let the main character have Down Syndrome because I often see children being bullied because of their appearance. In addition, I think it is important that we work on an inclusive film industry. That is why, in realizing this film, we involve both an actress and a crew member with a disability."
With this film we take on the challenge of working with a special cast and crew. We strive to give them the opportunity to shine in the film industry. Besides these special members of our cast and crew, we also work with a dog. This makes our film extra special!
Where do we stand now?
The script is locked and we almost have the whole cast and crew together. We have two fantastic child actors: Marie and Menno who play the roles of Marie and Jesse. The dog will be portrayed by Djinnie also known from the films of Mees Kees. These three are shown in the teaser above. We have an amazing location in the forest near Bunnik (The Netherlands). All we need now are the financial resources. The film will be shot in February 2019 followed by the premiere at the start of June 2019.
