About the project
LOCKLINEAn intergenerational story about (un)known women in art and textiles to delve into heritage, feminism, future design, and environmental issues.

Inspired by her grandmother and mother’s skilful hands for dressmaking, the writer and director of Life Is A Cultural Thread, brings this short documentary about women artists, designers, artisans, and entrepreneurs from the Netherlands and around the world. They will talk about their cultural background, creative process, the perils of underrepresentation, and over longstanding traditional weaving and dyeing techniques.

Interviews include textile designers involved in the conflict with fast fashion and overconsumption in our postmodern consumer society.

Life Is A Cultural Thread also centers on intergenerational cooperation with the goal to highlight that senior generations have the wisdom to pass on to the next one no matter the borders, language, or culture. It brings up how tradition could undermine fostering innovation.

Graduates from the Design Academy in Eindhoven are featured along experienced and award winner artists as Christie van der Haak (the only second woman recipient of the Ouborg Prize in The Hague).

Viviana M. Calderón de la Barca applies the principle of appreciation to the discussion of culture and politics, by approaching dialogue with magnanimity rather than with mere civility.

During her Social Design Residency at Baltan Laboratories she will further develop her research.

Would you, in the increasingly contentious arena of modern discourse, help this film project come true and consider donating now?

Quote that inspired the maker

"Creating art is like a fairytale where you also bump into difficult moments"
