About the project
LOCKLINEThe truth behind the euphoric social media posts about volunteerwork.

It started with wonder...

Two and a half years ago, we - Loeke de Waal and Steffi Posthumus - started our #doinggood adventure. Our timelines were flooded with posts by peers who went volunteering in far away places and we wondered: why do so many youngsters do this? Why do we think it's normal that unqualified youngsters travel to the other side of the earth to do "good"? And what are the effects of this phenomenon called ‘voluntourism’?

Joining the adventure

To answer these questions we followed and filmed Dutch 21-year-old Mitchell on his quest for world citizenship, adventure and purpose. The world of a volunteer turns out to be one full of new encounters and discoveries. But also one in which expectations and reality can clash. On social media it all seems perfect; everyone shows off the best sides of their experience, but what is it really like?

Our "mission"

Saturday December 5th, our film #doinggood premiered (in private) at the Louis Hartlooper Complex in Utrecht. The response was very positive, the Q & A immediately opened up the debate and visitors have been chatting about it long after still.

A great result, which only motivates us to provide a bigger platform and audience for #doinggood! And what could be a better way to do so than a film festival?!

Not only could we exhibit the film to a larger, diverser audience, we could talk with them about the topic as well!  And that's ultimately our goal: opening the dialogue about voluntourism and make people think critically about the matter.

Help us!

That's why we would love to sign up for various (international) festivals. But therefore we need money: The average festival subscription costs about 100 euros. Alongside, we need to make and send them DVDs.

So: would you like to help us open up the debate on voluntourism and do you think our film #doinggood would be the perfect tool to do so? Help us! Pick the reward(s) you like and become part of our #doinggood mission!
