About the project
LOCKLINEDid I inherit my father's bipolar disorder? For years that question drove me crazy. Now I want to know!

'SEED', THE DOCUMENTARY, TELLS THE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL STORY OF DRIES MEDDENS. DURING THE SEARCH FOR HIS FUTURE, HE DIGS INTO THE FAMILY PAST AND BUMPS INTO THE WALLS OF A SOCIETY WHERE SPEED, SOCIAL ENGINEERING AND INDIVIDUALISM PREDOMINATE.

After the death of his mother, the care for Dries' bipolar father falls on his plate. He discovers how crudely and ruthlessly society and psychiatry treat patients. His father eventually dies alone, during a period of admission to a closed ward of a mental institution.

While emptying his parent’s home, Dries discovers an old letter from his grandfather. The man appears to have led a busy, productive life. He is the founder of an internationally renowned seed breeding company (Nunhems Zaden, now owned by BASF) and still has time to paint, write diaries and conduct intensive correspondence. Dries finds similarities between his grandfather, his father and himself. Slowly the fear grows that his father's psychiatric illness might be hereditary. From grandfather to father to son? And what then germinates in Dries' children?

Strolling through the film and photo archives, with dramatic and sometimes hilarious finds from three generations of family history, he tries to find answers. But his search only leads to more questions.

Ultimately, Dries hopes to find the answers with the psychiatrist. The consultations and review of his archival material help Dries look at bipolarity with new eyes. He discovers that the most powerful medicine possibly is already within his reach.
