About the project
LOCKLINEA documentary about Milan, the shame surrounding autism and the doubt when you can't recognize yourself in the known image of someone with autism.

Gewoon Milan is a documentary about Milan von Raesfeld Meijer (27), who was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, a form of autism, when he was 8 years old. He is a social, spontaneous and empathic boy, who is often told that people around him doubt his autism, because these characteristics do not fit in the image of someone who is autistic? He has been told this so often that he himself has started to doubt it.

Because people often think in stereotyped images, Milan is unfortunately very embarrassed when he has to tell people that he has autism. He is afraid of suddenly being treated differently or not being accepted. To answer the question from his environment and get rit of his doubt, he does a diagnostic test for the last time to find out if he is really autistic.

Acceptance also has a big part in the documentary. How can you accept yourself, if you mostly feel shame for your autism. Acceptance is something that Milan's parents and also his sister Bellise, one of the makers, have been hoping for, for years. They feel that autism does not define him, but that he is nice as he is with or without autism.

We hope with this documentary to be able to give a different picture than the stereotypical image that everyone is familiar with. To make this happen we need your help. As young filmmakers, we don't have a budget for the film. Things like color grading, sound mixing, editing, music, registrations for film festivals and equipment cost a lot of money. Any amount of money is therefore welcome. With your help we can make it a beautiful documentary.

Quote that inspired the maker

"People with autism are often treated unequal, are being excluded or avoided because of prejudice. Negative expectations lead to discouragement and concealment of autism, out of shame or fear of being misunderstood or rejected. "
