CinemAsia

In 2006 CinemAsia has created FilmLAB, to stimulate a wider range of Asian representation on television and cinema screens in the Netherlands. Dutch-Asian filmmakers have a wealth of stories to tell, that rarely make it to Dutch cinema screens. FilmLAB provides the opportunity for Dutch-Asian filmmakers to hone their skills and fain experience in the art of filmmaking, both in front of and behind the camera.

Since the beginning of FilmLAB more than 20 films have been produced and shown. Not only during CinemAsia Film Festival, the only pan-Asian film festival of The Netherlands, but also during film festivals in The Netherlands and abroad, e.g. Berlin Asian Film Festival, Film by the Sea in Vlissingen, Bali International Film Festival, Shortcutz Amsterdam, Tong Tong Fair in The Hague and Indofilmcafé in Nijmegen. Some of the FilmLAB shorts have won prestigious awards during these festivals e.g. “Best Audience Award” or “Best Short Film”.

Every year we place an open call for filmmakers to enter the CinemAsia FilmLAB program. After the submissions are in, the FilmLAB producers make a selection and together with a team of scriptwriters and cinematographers they will work on realising their short film. They are being coached by the producers of CinemAsia, and FilmLAB is supported by companies as Cam-a-lot, Film More and Redline.

This year six stories with the theme “Lost in Translation” have been selected to be produced by a team consisting of 13 Dutch-Asian filmmakers, scriptwriters and cinematographers. CinemAsia FilmLAB collaborates with Cinecrowd to fund the production of these six shorts. If you think it is important to have the Dutch-Asian diaspora stories to be more visibe in the Dutch film scene; then support these film project!
