“Het is niet anders (It is what it is)”. That was Mrs. L’s favorite saying. At 73 years old, she has come to accept that she was never able to do any of the things she wanted to do. Mrs. L dreamed of becoming a doctor, of traveling, getting married and experiencing love. Instead, she has spent her life alone with a severe panic disorder and depression for over 50 years. Growing up, Mrs. L suffered physical and mental abuse at the hands of her parents. Her younger brother, who was the apple of her eye, killed himself 30 years ago. These days, her brief moments of joy come from interacting with the taxi drivers who drop her to Dr. Polak’s office for the weekly sessions during which they go over the practical aspects of Mrs. L’s suicide.
