Het gaat super goed, we zitten nu al zowat op 80%! Wij zijn dan ook al serieuze plannen aan het maken om eind juni naar Zuid-Afrika te gaan. En we zien daar heel erg naar uit.

Vorige week heb ik weer contact gehad met Nkosi. Ook hij kijkt er naar uit om te beginnen. Hij stuurde me een krantenberichtje uit 1976 met zijn foto er bij. In zijn voetbaltenue, als uitverkorene van de ‘Black XI’, staat hij daar in de bloei van zijn leven. Intrigerend om hem zo te zien.

Het is de eerste keer dat ik hem met twee goede ogen zie. Raar om te beseffen dat hij op dat moment nog geen idee heeft van wat hem te wachten staat. Binnen een paar maanden zal hij vader worden, gearresteerd en gemarteld worden, gevangen zitten op Robbeneiland en jaren later ook nog een oog verliezen.

In onderstaand krantenbericht uit 1976 noemen ze Nkosi ‘Patrick’. Dat is de Engelse naam die hij tijdens de apartheid heeft gekregen, zoals alle zwarte Afrikanen een Engelse naam hebben moeten aannemen, omdat de blanken hun eigenlijke namen te ingewikkeld vonden. Veel mensen, ook nu nog, noemen hem Patrick. Nkosi is er aan gewend, maar hij heeft er zelf afstand van gedaan door deze naam officieel uit zijn papieren te laten verwijderen.

In elk team moet er een ‘man van ijzer’ zijn. Iemand die hardheid toevoegt aan het spel op het middenveld en die overeind blijft wanneer in het penalty gebied de spanning oploopt. Dit is een taak die Patrick heel lang en heel goed heeft verricht bij de Pretoria Callies. Zo goed zelfs dat zijn standvastigheid en moed eerder dit jaar zijn beloond toen SANFA coach Gordon Edlestone hem selecteerde voor het Zuid-Afrikaanse nationale zwarte team, de Black XI. Ook op het internationale podium hield hij z’n hoofd erbij en ging hij gewoon door met zijn simpele agressieve stijl van voetballen. Van Molala hoef je geen bijzonder voetenwerk te verwachten: hij geeft er de voorkeur aan zijn tegenstanders te laten dansen.’
