About the documentary
Out of Breath tells the story of Sarah Smit (28) and Kim Clement (30), two young women suffering from the hereditary and (until now) incurable disease cystic fibrosis, also known as ‘taaislijmziekte’. The movie provides an exclusive insight into a life before and after a lung transplant and the tough choices young people suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF) have to face.
Why this movie?
Director Iris Verhoeven has witnessed up close the impact CF has on one’s life. A good friend of her mother suffered from the disease whilst growing up, and has now successfully undergone lung transplantation surgery. These experiences have inspired Iris and her colleague Els Anker to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis.
What is CF?
In the Netherlands, an estimate of 1.530 people suffer from cystic fibrosis (CF), a chronic and hereditary condition. People suffering from CF carry a genetic defect in their bodies, resulting in their mucus being unusually thick. As a result, enzymes and bodily waste matters cannot be transported properly and the mucus starts to form deposits. This affects the lungs in particular, and in turn leads to infections, difficulty with breathing and an increasing strain on the respiratory system. A lung transplantation is a necessary possibility to be able to continue to live, but the disease itself remains.
Where is your money going to?
Crowdfunding is used to pay for the documentary Out of Breath. The making of this documentary demands a significant amount of money. Even though we will of course invest ourselves, we cannot pay for the entire documentary on our own. With your help we can develop the documentary into a proper movie: every contribution matters and will help us forward. The donations will help us complete the post-production stages (editing, audio mastering, colour adjustments and English subtitles) as well as bringing the movie and CF into the international limelight.
Help us complete the documentary, and help us thank the people who contributed by giving their stories a public stage. Feel free to take a look at our website to see where your money is going and what has been funded so far. As a supporter you will continue to be a part of our project, from the start to the end.
