About the project
LOCKLINEA documentary about Guatemala’s first female attorney general who battles impunity and prosecutes former political leaders for genocide.

THE FILM Claudia Paz y Paz becomes Guatemala's first female Attorney General in 2010, in a country torn up by violence. 98% of murder cases remain unsolved and the murder of more than 100.000 Mayans during the civil war remained unpunished. Guatemalans have little faith left in the justice system. But Claudia is determined to break the downward spiral of corruption, violence and impunity. She proves to be successful beyond expectations. The rate of unsolved murder cases drops from 99% to 70% during her term and former dictator Efrain Ríos Montt gets convicted for genocide. With the conviction Claudia writes world history, it is the first time a national court charges it's own former dictator with genocide. She sparks hope. But re-election isn’t in the cards for Claudia: her wealthy opponents have had enough. Because she can no longer claim her right to protection, she is forced to leave the country.

THE  BEGINNING When Claudia Paz y Paz starts her term as the head of the Public Procecutors Office in 2010 it immediately became clear to director Joey Boink that this was a story that had to be told. Sander Wirken had at that point been working in Guatemala for several years and the two decided to join forces. They decided to contact Claudia and asked her bluntly if she wanted to meet with them. She invited them over.

“When we were on our way to meet Claudia for the first time, we were extremely nervous. Claudia had already received so much media attention and she had quite a reputation, plus she was in one of the most high-level jobs in the country. Later on we went to learn that we weren’t the only ones that were nervous. Claudia told us that she found the idea of meeting up with two tall Dutchmen who wanted to make a film about her very intimidating.”

After the meeting, Claudia decides to allow them acces to her life and take them along in her world.

THE PRODUCTION PHASE The past three years it has been common practice for Joey and Sander to suddenly have to drop everything and leave for Guatemala. Because there were developments that were of great importance to the country, Claudia and the film. The conviction of Efrain Rios Montt, the election of one of her strong opponents –Otto Perez Molina- as President of the country, her nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize and her early departure from the Public Prosecutors office on the 17th of May 2014. During her victories and her setbacks, the camera was rolling as a silent witness.

THE FUTURE With the crowdfunding campaign we want to finalize the film. After Claudia left office she had to flee the country, after her family had already left days earlier. The raised money would make it possible to shoot the final scenes of the film at Claudia’s current location. Moreover we could finance the post-production (audio design, colour grading and the recording of the soundtrack). With the remainder of the money, we want to make the film accessible to the biggest possible audience.
